Piles of dirty laundry don’t bother me anymore. Sure, I CAN’T STAND the clutter of it, but the doing-of-the–laundry has a different meaning. The piles mean we came, we saw, we conquered, or at least we tried. Just as the sun rises, you can be assured that when my little boy wears his pristine white pinstripes for baseball, they will come home with a full body-slide’s worth of dirt. But that means he worked hard and had fun. Little Things help us remember we are alive.
It’s never the BIG things that completely knock us out in Life, it’s usually a long chain of nasty little things that pick- pick- pick until we are worn down to the bone. In an opposite way, good Little Things are what lift us up, and nurture that “warm fuzzy” we crave.
Knowing silly Little Things about those whom we treasure goes an awfully long way. Maybe it’s someone’s favorite character in a book, or knowing that they like spearmint snowballs with condensed milk on top at the beach in summertime. Or maybe it’s knowing just how important the sound of the "Call to the Post" is to a friend on Derby Day. Maybe your child has one cuddly stuffed animal that really does the trick when none of the others can. Maybe you remember a special date on the calendar important to a friend that no one else remembers, but it is attached to a special memory. Maybe your best friend knows you like M&Ms mixed in with your popcorn. Or maybe you remember to slip a fresh pack of your daughter’s favorite gum into her purse on Sunday nights so she’ll find it at the right moment on a dreadful Monday at school.
But what does remembering all of that truly mean? It means we choose to invest our time, our brain space, our kindness, and our heart. It means that our actions say to those we treasure, “Hey, amidst all the crazy chaos of this Life, despite bad things that happen to us, I notice you. I know what is important to you. We exist here together and you matter. I am choosing to witness your Life. I want to put a spotlight on what is important to YOU today.“ A small investment of Love pays huge dividends in the Bank of Validation.
Little Things strike us deepest long after someone is gone. Knowing what is important to those we treasure brings Light. It gives them the priceless gift of a warm fuzzy feeling, sometimes just in the nick of time. It strengthens their Good, and that’s what we are about. Take a moment. Invest your heart and truly witness the lives of those you treasure. It’s simple. Just keep asking, “What is important to you today?”
