No one’s telephone rang the way ours did, accompanied by loud static that sounded like someone screaming for help. When the lights went out, it never failed to startle us. Even the lazy house cat would fall off the window ledge and land splay-legged on the terrazzo floor. The phone company couldn’t fix the problem and we got used to it. One quiet, breezy summer night, the static disappeared and all we heard was faint wailing; ma told us it sounded like a woman crooning but grandma was sure it was Aunt Tracy who died while on a call, two years ago.
