Why I don't teach "how to make money online"
Oh, damn it. What was I gonna write about again?
Don't know if this has ever happened to you... but I've been mulling over topics for the "next" blog post for the past week, and I had some good ones... but now when I sit down to write, it's all as if it never were.
Ain't that the damnedest thing.
Hmm... okay, well. Here's something I've been wanting to express for a while:
Back a few years ago, I taught people how to make money online.
Now, I don't, and I really want to make this distinction...
I am not in the business of telling people how to make money online or how to start an internet business from home.
Why? Because it's a stupid business filled with stupid people.
Nobody needs more information on how to start. The way you start is by starting. $10 books on amazon are probably one of the best sources to learn how to start from scratch. No need for $1997 home-study courses. In fact, a new book from Chris Guillebeau was just launched this week. Haven't read it, but Chris is a bawse.
(and... Warrior Forum Special Offers would be an incredibly BAD place to start...)
And... God forbid you end up learning how to write books about how to make money to sell to people wanting to make money, so they too can sell books about how to make money...
What I do now is teach direct marketing and direct-response copywriting. The latter would really be a sub-topic to marketing, but it deserves a category of its own. I heard Joe Polish explain it best: Copy is the oxygen that drives your marketing. (Yeah, just like oxygen... try holding your breath for 3 minutes and see what happens...)
I'm directing myself at people who already have businesses. Of course, everyone is welcome to read, watch and learn what I do... but that's what it is.
My real biz, behind the scenes, is as a copywriter and marketing consultants. I take other people's businesses and help them make more money in exchange for a piece of the pie.
And this, my friends...
Is the only way to become a true marketing ninja!
When you're isolated, with your head down in just your own business... you don't get to see the inside workings of other businesses.
Sure, you can watch it on a surface level, but you ain't diving in any time soon.
When you are consulting you can have your fingers in a lot of pies. You can spy on other people's businesses and get paid for it.
What do these people have in common?
- Dan Kennedy
- Jay Abraham
- Perry Marshall
- Gary Halbert
- John Carlton
- (and basically every other marketing genius in the world)
They have all done consulting in one way or another, even based their entire careers on it.
That's one of the main reasons why I do client work. Lord knows it ain't for the pleasure of dealing with clients.
And the pay isn't too shabby.
Finally... if you're pimping stuff in the "bizopp" market, I would strongly advise you to get your ass out of that, ASAP. The grass is greener just about everywhere else.
You're competing head to head with some of the savviest marketing guys on the interwebs, who all have more experience and more money than you.
There are thousands of places out there who could use some basic marketing skills. In some industries, ideas like "sending email" will send shockwaves through the marketplaces.
Now, enough of this! Go sell something!
Talk soon,
Linus
