Does the universe talk to you?
Because it certainly talks to me. My entire existence mostly consists of following the little signposts put out by the universe.
Or maybe I'm just imagining things. Either way, I seem to be doing OK.
And, it appears that I'm supposed to start this whole blog thing again, so here I am, with a quick story:
...
Yesterday, me and my mother were out walking the dogs. (we have two).
(And yes, in case you didn't know, I still live at home... I like to think I'm the youngest ad-man on the interwebs. Probably getting my own place some time this year, though at this point it just makes more economical sense to stay where I am...)
Now, we have one of those annoying front doors that you need to unlock by toggling a little... thing - by where the lock mechanism is.
We had agreed to leave the door unlocked, so we didn't bring the keys with us.
I left the house first, knowing the door to be in "locked mode" - but I naturally assumed my mom would unlock it on her way out. I felt a tinge of not-rightness as this happened. Something felt out of place, but I didn't think much of it at the time... and I would come to face the consequences of my blunder about an hour later...
Nice, pleasant walk. It's sunny. Warm in the sunlight, a bit chilly in the shade. And the wind is strong enough to turn "a bit chilly" into "rather unpleasant."
I get back about 45 minutes later, finding the door locked.
"What?"
"Oh, I guess mom must have changed her mind. I'm sure she has a key with her."
10 minutes later, I see my mother walking towards the house with the smaller, slightly more insane dog.
She doesn't have a key.
She had assumed (?) that I had unlocked the door as I left, so she just slammed the door behind her (??).
My own mother or otherwise, female behavior doesn't always make sense to me.
And dad is out of town.
Shit.
What to do?
Mom has the deer-eyes look for another minute or so while anxiously repeating "what the hell do we do now?"
Two of our neighbors used to have spare keys, but for some reason they don't anymore.
We end up calling one of those services that tell you the phone numbers to various places. Like a "live" yellow pages kind of thing. (what are these called in English, anyway?)
We have to sit outside for another hour while waiting for the locksmith to arrive. And it's cold. Ugh.
We're both hoping that he's gonna pull out some ninja-like contraption and pick the front door like in the spy movies.
Finally he arrives. He laughs and tells us that's what everybody thinks.
Instead, he pulls out a drill and proceeds to put a hole right through the lock. The he grabs some other tool and a hammer and bangs away at it for another ten minutes before the door finally busts open.
And now, we need a new lock.
...
Almost everyone says they think everything happens for a reason.
But it's just something nice to believe. It's one of those handy beliefs to desperately cling to in order to make sense of something that doesn't seem to make any sense.
For me, it's not just something I believe. It's something I'm aware of, and experience in every waking moment.
The very first post on this blog, since I decided to move away from the Unstupid Marketing blog to a more personal space, was this: How Change Happens.
But it's not just how change happens, it's how everything happens if you let it.
I became aware of the whole blogging thing a while back, at least a month ago.
But it wasn't time. It was there, in my awareness, waiting. The seed was sown. I would watch it, and see what happened.
More recently I've started thinking about some new copywriting concepts, and old ones for that matter... and just generally re-immersing myself in the marketing and copywriting spheres.
A few days ago I posted this: Most useful copywriting skill.
And I wasn't sure why. I had the thought appear in my head and felt the urge to put it on the blog, but I wasn't sure why.
Then the whole "locked out" incident occurred, and all the pieces fell into place.
The only reason why such a bizarrely unlikely thing would happen, for me, was that it would make for a good story.
I specifically thought so right after I realized that we'd been locked out. "Well, at least it'll make for a good story."
That's when it clicked. There's no "at least" about it. It's the only thing about it.
...
I'm sure this makes absolutely no sense to you... but maybe it does.
Most people have a sense that there might be unseen forces compelling us at times. Everyone has, at some point, been in the right place at the right time and wondered how in the world they could be so lucky... and felt profoundly grateful for it.
If you think it's something mystical and unknowable, you think wrongly. It is knowable. You can become familiar with, and a part of this process.
It's how everything happens. It might seem just plain weird to you, but this is how my life works all the time.
Everyone is in the right place, at the right time, all the time... whether you see it or not.
In any case, something to think about.
...
I thought this would make a good introduction, or as a "comeback" kind of post.
Some people thought I would leave the whole marketing sphere forever, but I always knew I wouldn't.
It would impede my own process and my own thinking to do so.
I have several high-level marketing concepts brewing in my head. If they are not expressed, there won't be room for new stuff. That would make everything generally unpleasant for everyone, because as a consulting marketer and copywriter, I need to stay innovative.
There's lots of stuff in the works.
If you'd like to stay in the loop, sign up to the newsletter to the left.
Expect a post about once a week, and occasionally more often.
... and let me know what you think of this one! If there's enough interest, I might talk some more about weird stuff.
Now... go sell something!
