I just watched Beyoncé perform live.
(It was a Youtube clip, I wasn't there.)
But holy shit. What hit me like a ton of bricks is her authenticity as a performer.
She gets on stage, and she's just herself.
People being themselves is a RARE commodity.
Being exposed to people who have found their voice is just a delightful experience.
People ask me what type of music I like, and I say I don't subscribe to genres, I listen to artists.
It's all about the individual. I will listen to anything from Kendrick Lamar to Lana Del Rey to Miles Davis.
But seriously. Seeing Beyoncé on a stage is one of the most amazing things I have ever seen. There are just no layers. Most people have at least sixteen layers of costume plastered on.
And it makes you go "YES. This is wonderful and delightful. I feel grateful just to be able to experience this."
And it's the SAME thing when you experience authenticity in anything.
Watching Justified makes me giddy. Those writers are just so excellent and it's all wonderful.
I watched Seven Psychopaths last night. From the opening line, which put a big smile on my face, I could just tell it was going to be wonderful.
"Was it Dillinger got shot through the eyeball, or am I thinking of somebody else?"
Make wonderful things. Make things that delight people with its wonderfulness.
Do you get it?
There's this X factor.
And it's what separates the lame and mediocre from everything else.
A good starting point is relentlessly peeling off the layers.
Dump the costumes.
Just express yourself authentically.
Then people will go... WOW! I wish I could be like that guy.
