If you're doing real journaling work, whether in an attempt to just understand yourself, your beliefs, your worldviews, your thought processes... or incite real, spiritual growth, or gain clarity about a particular subject... or whatever else... here's something you should know:
If at some point during your writing you don't feel like you just got violently punched in the gut, you're doing it wrong.
In fact, it might feel worse than getting punched in the gut, because you know that it was you who just punched yourself in the gut.
If you keep digging into your belief systems for long enough, eventually you'll uncover something ugly. A lot of times it will have to do with shame or feeling like you're not worthy.
When you find one, you'll know, instantly. It hurts.
At this point, DON'T RUN AWAY FROM IT. That will be your first impulse. It can hurt so bad you can't stand to look at the page. You can't bring yourself to read the sentence you just wrote.
Do it anyway. Stare it down.
Then KEEP digging until you hit bedrock.
