This website has failed me so many times. I love the idea of a What's Happening website for the English speaking community of Busan. It can be a great resource for an ex-pat community this large, it's well needed if you want to stay on top of things and be social.
Unfortunately, Busan Haps doesn't take this position seriously, or it does and they just do a terrible ass job of it. The site is updated infrequently, and they accept the dumbest bullshit editorials about anything. I think people read this garbage because 1. They are English teachers with nothing better to do, and 2. They come to Busan Haps looking for interesting local news, see something else and say, “Fuck it, I'm already here, might as well read this.”
I wish they'd be more selective about what they publish, because they've managed to clutter their website with all sorts of nonsense like some guy's review of The Avengers as a “Critic-Proof Film”. Yeah you know, like how The Olive Garden is a Critic-Proof restaurant?
“Hmm, yes Schindler's List had good cinematography, Morgan Freeman had a decent performance in The Shawshank Redemption...but The Avengers? Absolute masterpiece. Critic-proof, I dare-say.”
Go there right now. Just glance at the front page and look at what percent of the site is covered in advertisements. I guarantee you missed something that looked like an article but was just a cleverly disguised ad. And if you think the homepage looks post-Katrina, wait until you see the content, or what little of it they have.
The restaurant listings are written terribly with incomplete information, or in many cases so outdated they aren't even in business anymore. There's three in the PNU section alone. The editorial articles are some of the most boring fucking articles I
Here's an example of what passes for an article at Busan Haps. It's a review of the bar, Soul Trane.-
One of the area’s oldest and most well known foreign bars run by the godfather of foreign bars, Kim Dong-ha. In the basement beneath his other cool bar, Crossroads.
Pool table. Darts.
Home to the Ha-Ha-Hole the first Friday of every month. Comedy open mic at its something or other.
That's it. That's the entire fucking article. You can tell by the way it ended that it's written by the type of guy who masturbates and just wipes the cum on his sleeve and goes back to browsing Reddit.
Busan Haps feels more like a domain where ten different bloggers use to pimp their own (mostly uninteresting and shitty) writing while making money off advertising rather than a magazine dedicated to improving the social welfare of ex-pats in Busan.
Sure, most of this blog is also just some fratty asshole's opinion of various Korean minutia. But then again this blog doesn't purport to be anything else. Busan Haps is supposed to be the e-magazine for news, classifieds, and information for ex-pats in Busan. And the standard they hold themselves to is atrocious.
This coming from a guy who once wrote for a paper called “The Booze News”.
