Lake Placid, NY has been on my bucket list for a long time, and this weekend I finally made the 6 hour trek north from NYC.
If
you never heard of Lake Placid, it is a small outdoor town in the
Adirondack mountains that is famous for holding both the 1932, and 1980
winter Olympics.
My trip started off with some early
suspense. I had a little bit less than a half a tank of gas when I
passed Albany, NY, but I was unable to find an open gas station for
about an HOUR when I got into the Adirondack region. For some reason
all the gas stations close early, and none of them let you pump it
yourself with your credit or debit card. After a quick panic, I
actually had to park in a gas station at 2am, and I ended up sleeping in
my car until they opened up at 6!
When the lady showed
up and started opening up the gas station around 5:30am, she told me
"at least 3x a week I have somebody waiting outside for gas". You would
think that they would leave the pumps on, but for some reason the
entire Adirondack region closes their gas stations early. Lesson
learned, and I had to sleep in 20 degree weather in my car for about 4
hours.
I arrived at my hotel around 7am, and I
immediately did a quick tour of the town. Lake placid is really, really
nice. The town has a decent sized lake, with all types of stores and
restaurants along the water.
