'Social Media' is a raging word which has been a common word among people these days. We are surrounded by social media be it on a computer or a mobile and it has become an integral part of the society. So what exactly is Social Media and who creates the buzz around social media????
Social media is a very broad term and accumulates several different types of media on the web such as videos, blogs, photos, networks, etc. It is a two-way communication channel which is totally different from the traditional one way media (newspaper, radio, TV). It lets everyone share content that other people can share, in turn, with their online connections. Its YOU that creates the buzz around social media.
"Social media envelopes web-based and mobile-based technologies to share and discuss information between organisations, communities and individuals".
There are many categories of social media and many of the websites have become a mixtures of these categories. However lets look at the main categories:
Today, Instagram announced that it reached 150 million active users and I was wondering which are the top 30 social media websites which have the maximum number of active users. Lets have a look at few statistics below:

Social Media Websites like Facebook, Twitter and Google Plus are Social Media platforms are targeted for a wide range of users and fulfills various purposes like business, keeping in touch with family and friends, social games, etc. But there are very few social media networks which are niche and are targeted for a particular group of people.
The best part of niche social networks is that the take the targeting and segmentation is taken care of and a Social Media Marketer doesn't have to worry to find the right audience. With the increase of Social Media over the years, professional networking has become important and it is the best way a person can find opportunities or land at a job. With Economic depression across the world, people think twice to leave a job or be worried to get slashed from a company as Blackberry announced recently. Thus with Social Media on the rise and present everywhere, people can utilize their skills on different Social Media Networks or design a creative resume to get noticed by employers. If you had wanted a career in Social Media in 2007, you would have been called "weird" as it would have be assumed that you are just another "social media" geek who likes to spend time on Facebook and Twitter. But in the last few years, as the Social Media Networks have increased and been on a rise, social media has become a prominent career among people and companies are increasingly using this medium to reach and provide value to their customers. The likes, retweets, pins and circles aren’t simply fun and games anymore and can actually lead to promising careers.
According to data from LinkedIn compiled by social marketing platform Offerpop, there has been an increase of above 1300% increase in social media positions posted on LinkedIn since 2010 with a sharp increase from 883% to 1357% in Q2 2013 alone.
