Life in the past few weeks can be summed up by four numbers : 2048. This crazy game has been the source of many number-related nightmares recently and I CAN'T STOP PLAYING IT.
Well, at least it's a better addiction than Flappy Bird because we can all lie to ourselves and pretend that playing a game involving numbers means that are somehow practicing our math and becoming a little more intelligent in the process.
During these few weeks of playing I have also came up with a list of lessons about life that we can learn from 2048. It also helps me feel less guilty about my addiction so that's nice.
1. The perfect match might never meet
Depressing much? You know when you have two 512 tiles that look so good together but they are at opposite corners? You try your best to get them to meet, to fall in love, and to match up to become a beautiful 1024.
But no, before you know it, game over. Similarly, sometimes in life two people in love might be the perfect match, but they just aren't fated to be together. It's kind of like Romeo and Juliet but they are numbers.
2. Never ignore your problems, no matter how small they may seem.
During the game, we tend to focus on the big numbers. Whenever we make a move, a new 2 or 4 tile appears but usually we just ignore those, thinking "Eh, those 2s will sort themselves out".
The next thing you know, your whole board is filled with those small numbers and your game is over. This happens in life as well. Too often we find ourselves ignoring our small problems, thinking that they would magically solve themselves if we just let them be.
Ultimately, these are the problems that end up screwing us over.
3. Don't just focus on the goal. Focus on the small steps required to achieve it.
As most us would know by now, the secret to winning the game is to focus on the small numbers and accumulate them bit by bit, instead of rushing in and crashing all the big numbers together as most people probably tried when they first started out.
Often in life, the key to success is to take things one step at a time. There are often huge obstacles in our way to achieving our goals and you will never overcome them if you just focus on the goal.
Instead, focus on the process and take it step by step as overcoming each small obstacle will bring you closer to your goal.
4. Life will throw the most absurd of distractions at you.
Most people have very short attention spans and in the process of working towards your goals, life will throw any kinds of distractions at you. Some are pretty straightforward, like a funny video that you might chance upon on Youtube.
Some are a little weirder:
Oh hey! A foreign husband! Just what I was looking for. Meh, the game can wait.
5. Never give up.
This one's pretty straightforward really. When you lose a game of 2048, do you throw a bitch-fit and say "Screw this, I'm never gotta do this anymore" and deleted the game?
No, you throw a bitch-fit and you try again. And you know you will keep pressing that "Try Again" button till you actually succeed.
We do not give up easily when it comes to a game, because we know that we will get better at it and we will eventually win. So why do we often give up so easily in life?
6. Success comes when you least expect it.
There are many times while playing the game when I think to myself: "This is it. I'm finally going to get that 2048 this time". Whenever that thought comes to my mind, I will always end up losing that game. I can't even come up with an explanation for that, it's almost creepy.
However, during the game that I finally succeeded in getting that 2048, it was most unexpected. I didn't even think that I would do it, it was just yet another game to me. And when it least expected it, I did it.
7. Always strive for more.
When you finally hit that coveted 2048 tile, the game does not stop there. Instead, it gives you the option of continuing the game and pushing your limits.
Similarly, when we achieve success, we should not be satisfied and just stay where we are. We should always be striving for more, and challenge ourselves constantly to see how far we can go in life.
After all, why settle for 2048 when you can get 4096, or even 8192?
