30 years

Marriage is not like the movies in terms of shots of wedded bliss. Let me be clear, it is hard work.

My wife and I are celebrating 30 years of marriage. At dinner last night, we were seated at our table. After a couple of minutes my wife said that she was not comfortable in the chairs were at the table. No problem, we asked to be moved and were promptly.

I mention this because 30 years ago I doubt we would have done that. I doubt I would have done that. My wife nailed it when she said we were taught to be nice.

Being nice and asking for what you want are not mutually exclusive, but it took a long time to realize this. You can be nice and demanding of what you deserve.

Rain, the beach, and peace

This was to be one of the last good opportunities to get to the beach this summer. Me and my oldest along with some of his good friends came down late yesterday. My wife and the rest of the brood are going to join us later.

Rain is in the forecast for the whole weekend. Bummer right?

Not really. Both my son and I had the same observation this morning. Even if it rains and we are home bound, it is good to get a change of scenery. The change resets our mood.

This is also a place I came a few years ago after being laid off from a long time employer. I was not distraught because I knew it was coming. But the beach provided a reset in my mind. I sat on the porch with a view like the photo in this post. It gave me time to reflect, not to dwell. I hatched my plans on what to do next. It was and is therapeutic.
