What Is Recursive Self-Improvement?
The term recursive self-improvement refers to the idea of an artificial intelligence that is able to improve its own intelligence, and then use its enhanced intelligence to make even better improvements. In other words, improving its ability to improve itself, and by doing so, achieving exponential growth.
This site is for humans who also want to improve themselves exponentially.
Give Me A Snappy Elevator Pitch
That second part is key: many similar communities fall into the trap of constantly talking and never doing. I want people who actually take action, experiment, and swap tips on what works and what doesn't.
What's On This Site?
This site is organised around what I believe are five steps to recursive self-improvement.
Step 1 is Adopting Meta-Habits; particular habits which make it easier to adopt other positive habits. In other words, improving your ability to improve yourself. For example, practising meditation makes it easier to control your impulses. Here's my list of essential meta-habits.
Step 2 is Science: taking a rational, experimental approach to self-improvement. There are lots of fad diets out there, for example, but that doesn't mean dieting never works - it simply means you have to first take a critical look at the existing data. The "Body" and "Mind" sections contain scientific analysis of topics from the mundane, like nutrition and exercise, to the esoteric, like neurofeedback and nootropics.
Step 3 is Technology. Clearly, there's a limit to how far unaugmented humans can improve themselves, but we've been using tools to grow stronger and smarter since the stone age. Modern technology is improving exponentially, and yet often it only serves our more negative impulses. The "Tools" section looks at how to harness technology for positive ends.
Step 4 is Purpose: there's no point giving yourself improved capabilities if you don't know what to do with them. The "Work" section has tips on productivity, career advice, and entrepreneurship, but more importantly, it discusses how you can steer your life to have the biggest positive impact on the world.
Step 5 is Community -- surrounding yourself with strong, positive, rational individuals who are also trying to improve themselves. Call it mutual recursion if you like. I built this site on the awesome new SETT platform because I want to make the community the focal point of this site.
Do You Really Think Humans Can Improve Themselves Exponentially?
