2014 Purpose Statement

I was inspired by the challenge put forth by Tynan's post Sticking to It Works; most notably, by the story of the man who drew every day for eight years, ultimately becoming a self-taught professional artist.

I've dabbled in some freelance Chinese/English translation and interpretation in the past few years, but have been wanting to hone my skills to an elite level. If I was to benchmark my current skill set, I would say that my written Chinese to English translation skills are strong, my Chinese to English oral interpretation skills are average, and my English to Chinese written and oral translation/interpretation skills are very weak.

I agree with Tynan that there is just something powerful to "sticking to it". Consistency wins out in the long run. Instead of focusing on a nebulous goal this next year (ie. Get Better at Translation/Interpretation), or even a specific goal (ie. Be Able to Interpret Ted Talks from English to Chinese in Real Time), I'll instead be choosing to focus on fostering a daily habit.

I heretofore commit to 365 Days of Translation & Interpretation, starting on January 1st, 2014 and continuing until December 31st, 2014. I will post a daily blog post with a written and oral sample of English to Chinese translation. Every other day will also include a Chinese to English translation.

Some guidelines to keep in mind:

About "Sticking To It" + Video Blogging

On DROdio

This is the first of what will be a series of video blogs that I'll be posting as we ramp up a new startup called PointAbout.  In each of these video blogs, I'll give the following disclaimers:

1) There may be a long delay between the time I video blog about an event and when I post it.  I won't be posting any content until all of it is publicly known, and since I want to be able to give a real, full account of what's happening at the company, by definition that means that sometimes I'll have to withhold some content for a while (maybe even years).  This is a long-term project, so that's OK with me.  I'll release what I can, when I can.

2) I'll be using a service called Callwave to transcribe the video content into text.  If you're curious as to why, you can learn about it here.
