A shot rang out and Jack sat up straight. The blanket was on the red, concrete floor and the night lamp served no purpose. He heard a door slam outside and screeching tyres. He pulled the curtain to the side and saw the streetlamp yellow upon an empty street. A second later he noticed a man limping out of the alley from below the apartment. The man looked up at Jack, as if he knew there was a peeper. They stared at each other for a moment: a six-year old boy at his middle-aged father with a hole instead of a nose.
